What that percentage actually means

Back

It is a similarity, not a promise, and we would rather say so than let you assume otherwise.

When the report says a region is a 78% match, it means the typical wine of that place sits close to what you told us on the handful of things we measured: weight, sweetness, freshness, grip and oak.

It does not mean you will enjoy 78% of the bottles. It does not mean anything about quality, price or a particular vintage. And it is only as good as what you told us, which on the first pass is not very much.

We show the number because it is useful for comparing one suggestion with another. We explain it because a number with no explanation is how the wine trade has been intimidating people for a century, and we would rather not.
